YJA meets author Hannah Kent
Best-selling author, Hannah Kent, is currently on tour to celebrate the paperback edition of her book, Burial Rites. Young Journalists Calvin and Jess, from Priory Witham Academy, met up with Hannah at a book signing held at The Collection, Lincoln and were eager to chat to the hugely talented writer.
Hannah told YJA the book actually revolves around a true story that she picked up whilst on an exchange programme in Iceland when she was 17, and this particular story had impacted on her greatly and she couldn’t help but find out more about Agnes Magnúsdóttir.
(Agnes is quite an infamous persona in Iceland, as she was the last person to be executed in Iceland in 1829, and many people today still speak of her in a bad manner.)
Hannah wasn’t quite satisfied with the way Agnes was remembered and this encouraged her to find out more, resulting in Burial Rites.
Leading novelist Kate Mosse described the book as ‘One of the most gripping and intriguing books I’ve read this year’ and newspapers have labelled the book as ‘Remarkable’ and ‘Exceptional’.
Hannah plans to write another book, set in 1826 in Ireland. She said this revolved around a true story that she came across during research for Burial Rites.
