Stephanie’s Stunning Strike

R2Stephanie Roche- a female footballer-has been nominated for Fifa’s ‘Goal of the Year’ along with stars Robin Van Persie, from the Netherlands, and James Rodriguez, from Colombia.

The Republic of Ireland women’s international scored a stunning volley for Peamount United against Wexford, back in October 2013.

The goal was magnificent but the skill before that was just unbelievable! Shielding off a defender, Roche controls the ball then flicks it up in the air. Then she waited for the ball to drop before volleying it into the top corner of the net.

Luckily, the wonder goal was captured on film, only because the Wexford manager had arranged to have the match recorded.

“The reaction was incredible,” she said. “And all the attention the goal got at the time really helped promote the women’s game, which I was delighted about. And now this is a great boost too, so it’s brilliant.”

After the goal, Roche was signed to the French club, ASPTT Albi, to play professionally.”

Roche told Sky Sports News, “It is always a good step to see women nominated for the Puskas Award and this is obviously the first time one has been in the top three.”

Voting closed on the 1st of December. The results will be announced on January 12th. According to bookmakers Paddy Power, Roche’s odds of winning went from 12-1 to 9-1.

It was estimated that only ninety-five fans saw the strike live but now it has had more than three million views on YouTube and counting.

You have a good, appealing writing style, Eleanor.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if Stephanie gets her hands on the trophy instead of the likes of Van Persie?

Keep up your great work – you have got off to a cracking start.
