All-French Rugby Final
The final of European Champions Cup will be an all-French encounter after Toulon and Clermont scraped through their semis against Leinster and Saracens.
Toulon’s victory was secured in extra time, when South African winger Bryan Habana scored a brilliant interception try. His scorching pace took him past several despairing Leinster defenders.
The other semi-final was played between the English club, Saracens, and the French club Clermont. A tense game was won by Clermont, so the final will see two big French clubs come face to face.
The grand finale will be at Twickenham on May 2nd and although no British team will be competing for the prized silverware it promises to be a mouth sizzler! There will, though, be plenty of British talent on show in the final.
Toulon’s Welsh fullback, Leigh Halfpenny (see photograph) says it is a dream to reach the European Champions Cup final. He kicked six penalties plus a conversion and was voted man-of the match.
Toulon’s Delon Armitage and brother Steffon will enjoy the opportunity to show why they should be in the England squad for this autumn’s rugby world cup.
(The same can be said of Clermont’s English fullback Abendanon, who is in a brilliant run of form. But England have stated they will only pick players from English clubs, unless there are exceptional circumstances.)
Toulon also won the cup last year (see photograph below) so expectations are high.
