Our Lionesses Roar into the Semis
For the first time since 1990, England Ladies – guided by Mark Sampson – have made it through to the final four in the World Cup. They face former champions, Japan, in the ‘biggest game in England’s women’s football’.
Forward Jodie Taylor and right back Lucy Bronze helped the Lionesses have a 2-1 victory over the hosts, Canada. Their win progresses them further in the World Cup than even the men’s squad have in fifteen years. The other semi-final will be battled out by the two hot favourites, the USA and Germany.
England’s journey to the semi-finals has earned lots more media attention than a women’s team sport ever has before, with the quarterfinal result being spread across many newspapers’ front and back page. Captain, Steph Houghton, however believed that the attention was thoroughly ‘deserved’.
They have also been given lots of support from the English public and celebrities- such as Wayne Rooney, The Duke of Cambridge as well as some music and film stars, through social media.
England legend- David Beckham- posted, ‘Girls what a performance. We are so proud of what you have achieved and the passion you have shown gives us so much pride. Our lionesses roar into the semi’s.’
The fans of the Lionesses will be waiting anxiously for Thursday’s match against Japan, if they don’t mind watching it from midnight! Will this game see England women through to the World Cup Final? Maybe even the World Cup title? Let’s wish the Lionesses good luck in their upcoming game in Edmonton.
