What has the England national team come to? IMO #1

Hi, I’m Will from Heighington Millfield Primary Academy, I am a keen journalist and football fan, that is why I am starting a new football-based series of articles called IMO (standing for ‘in my opinion’). I will add to this series once a month, so you can look forward to some new footy articles arriving at the YJA website!

2England are the 13th best team in the world. So why are they appointing a manager that has been sacked from West Ham and just managed to rescue Sunderland from relegation? In my opinion, England are in a very dark place right now and they need to find their feet again.

Despite the fact we have one of the highest budgets out of all the national teams in the world, England still has to go and get another ‘yes man’ that will do whatever the FA want him to do. It seems as if we have no character in our managers whatsoever!

Raheem Sterling was a promising young player when he first burst on to the scene at Manchester City, however when it comes to the international stage it’s like he’s putting Joe Hart at striker, useless! Going back to that tragic tournament that was Euro 2016, we took possibly on paper the most in-form strike force at the whole tournament. Between Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy they got 1 goal!

After England getting knocked out by Iceland (of all people), there was uproar on social media. One comment on twitter that I totally agreed with stated: “Where’s the plan b Roy, or is your other plan just to sit on the side-line and scratch your head in hope that someone can pull something off to save you your job?”

We are now behind Wales in the FIFA world rankings, despite being able to choose from around 3 times as many players. Let’s hope that England eventually will have a successful cup run, at least getting to a semi-final and, of course, knocking the Welsh out on the way!

Awesome article Will, really accomplished opinion writing! Really looking forward to the next instalments mate.

I must agree with you about the dark place the England team finds itself in. I thought our 4-1 loss to Germany at the 2010 World Cup was bad, but sinking to defeat against Iceland was a whole new low. Nonetheless, I do believe Allardyce is the best Englishman available and he won’t just dissolve into the background like Hodgson did.

    Keep it up, good work!
