Pedal power for pupils

A school teacher from the US has introduced pedals under desks. Apparently this will help the pupils focus on their work. The teacher had said that this has definitely helped.

At Martin Middle School, maths teacher Bethany Lambeth said that her pupils would not stop moving around the classroom. Because of this, she has decided to have pedals under their desks so they can use up their energy by pedalling!

Ms Lambeth used to teach a primary school and she said that the children did more PE there and had more energy compared to the children at the class she teaches now.

She got this idea off an article that she read in class and that inspired her to try it. “I didn’t tell the students what they were for but just put them under the desks and said ‘see what you think of this’,” she said. Not all desks have pedals underneath them, so not all the children have to use one.

Within a week some of the children told Ms Lambeth that they were focusing on their work more and she noticed that as well. “They were able to recall a lot more of what I was saying and because they participated more they understood more and did better in tests.”

It cost £138 ($180) for one set of pedals. The school are hoping to get more pedals because they are definitely working by helping the children to concentrate. They are getting better marks in all the tests they are doing. This has been a big improvement.

What a great idea – getting fit whilst doing maths! What could be better?

Maybe teachers could have one too…it would mean we could go to the gym and mark books at the same time!
