The Baudelaire orphans are looking for answers about their parents mysterious deaths

A Series of Unfortunate Events is a new Netflix family show which tells the tale of the Lemony Snicket series. The Netflix original starring Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton and Malina Weissman tells the story of the Baudelaire orphans whose lives are filled with misery and very unfortunate events.

This adaptation covers 4 different books from the series in the first season. The 2004 film starring Jim Carrey of the same name has not had nearly as much positive reactions as the TV series and most deem it to be better than the movie. Netflix has not had many family friendly originals but a series of unfortunate events has been a great start for the streaming platform that mainly focuses their originals towards an older audience. Many well-known actors feature in this TV series such as Joan Cusack, Catherine O’Hara and K. Todd Freeman.

Without spoiling the entire plot, the story is about the Baudelaire orphans who are sent to live with the villainous count Olaf, who is after their enormous fortune, after their parents perish in a mysterious fire. After this moment their lives become a tale of depressing unfortunate events, being placed in the care of many guardians while Count Olaf chases them down. Patrick-Harris who plays Count Olaf said about his character, “He’s probably the most dastardly, but he’s villainous in a family-friendly way. So he can be over-the-top terrible. You don’t have to spend a lot of time with motivation or backstory.”

This show is a balance of family friendly content and dark, depressing storylines. You can’t help but be invested in the lives of Violet, Claus and Sunny as they try to solve their families’ mysteries with Lemony Snicket narrating their life hinting towards the audience of what lies ahead. I have only watched the first 3 episodes but already I’m hooked. If you like a solid story and characters to love and loath then this is the show for you.
