Joey Barton Banned from Playing Football for 18 months
The 34-year-old found himself back in the ‘dock’ for placing bets on the outcome of games – many involving his own clubs!
This talented and combative footballer has played for Burnley, Newcastle United, Queen’s Park Rangers, Marseille and Rangers. Possibly due to his fiery nature and headline-hitting misdemeanours, he’s only gained one international cap for England.
After his hefty £30,000 fine and 18-month ban, he confessed, “I’m addicted to betting.” This could be classed as an understatement as, over a decade, he admitted placing 1,260 bets on matches!
During that period he’s often been in trouble: in his Premier League career, he has been sent off six times, two fewer than Patrick Vieira, Richard Dunne and Duncan Ferguson.
The only England cap that Joey gained was for a brief cameo appearance, when, back in 2007, he came off the bench for just 12 minutes. He was almost recalled in 2011, but Fabio Capello changed his mind. “He is a good but dangerous player because you could end up 10 v 11,” were the wise words uttered by the England manager.
Many will think that his latest ban will surely signal the end of his controversial football career.
