Anyone for a Rainbow Bagel?
Bagels are delicious. After all, who can argue with the incredible taste of the freshly hand made delights? So how do you improve on something that is already so good?
Rossillo’s Bagel Store based in Brooklyn in New York, have tried to do just that by adding a splash of colour. Owner Scott Rossillo has been rolling these sweet treats out for the last two decades and New Yorkers have been buying his ‘Rainbow Bagels’ but only recently has the UK come to know the stripy baked treats. The Beigel Shop on Brick Lane in London has a sign in the window saying “New York’s Famous ‘Rainbow beigel’ sold here,”
The crazy coloured creations are proving very popular with the Brick Lane shop selling 1,500 of them a day. In New York Scott Rossilo’s customers normally have theirs served with Nutella or ice-cream. Chatting to The Guardian newspaper Head chef from The Beigel Shop, Jimmy Taffat says “This is maybe in America. Not in London.” In London things are a lot more savoury being served with salmon and creme cheese or salted beef.
So what do the bagels taste like? Well according to Head Chef Jimmy “There is a hint of banana in the yellow colour, a hint of mango in the orange and a hint of strawberry in the red. They taste subtly sweeter than the shop’s standard bagels.”
Think I might pop to Brick Lane next time I get to visit London.
