Kavya’s India Series Part 5: The Man who Claims he hasn’t Eaten or Drunk for 70 Years

Kavya, a Year 6 Young Journalist based at Burgh School, has family roots in India and the highlight of her year is when she makes her annual visit to see her relatives based in New Delhi. She has decided to share her love of this vast country with YJA readers! (To read all her stories just type in ‘Kavya’ in the YJA search box above.)

Within my Indian series, I have already told you about many amazing and odd things about India, but be ready to have your socks blown off! My latest story is about a man who many believe hasn’t eaten or drunk for seven long decades.

There are a few people, however busy their life is, that can’t even remember the last meal they’ve consumed but Prahlad Jani is one of them.

He is an old chap who, allegedly, hasn’t eaten for seven decades. So, if true, the last meal that passed his lips was during World War II!

Everyone asks how this is possible and it’s odd that doctors are even taking him seriously, but it looks to be true! No human should survive in such conditions, the lack of water alone should have killed him but, astonishingly, he hasn’t suffered any ill effects.

Prahlad said: “I am fit and strong today and even the doctors agree. They ran every test possible for 15 days and proved that I don’t need food to keep me strong!”

No food? No water? Some people even think that this is a super power that God has sent him for his good deeds, but who knows? Some believe this is real and some believe it fake; all we know is an Indian doctor, who specializes in studies of people who claim supernatural abilities, has confirmed it’s the truth.

Even after a 15-day examination, DIPAS (India’s defence research organization) is still interested in running more tests to see how metabolic waste material is eliminated from his body, where he gets his energy for substance and how he stays hydrated.

In India, Hindus fast sometimes for up to eight days, without any ill effects. Although Prahlad claims have been supported medically, he has been dismissed by others as a “village fraud”, as most humans cannot survive without food beyond 50 days.

Love all your India articles Kavya, very interesting and full of amazing facts. This one however, I’m not too sure about!? I’m no doctor but surely it is literally impossible to survive without water for a week let alone a few years.

Keep up the good work, I really hope to go to India myself one day.

Hi Matt, sorry that you didn’t like it as much. I thought it was interesting as even doctors claim it’s true! Even I didn’t believe it at first, but the doctors are usually right, right?
