YouTube Rewind 2017
The good, the bad and the ugly
YouTube rewind is a video released by YouTube in early December every year that celebrates the most viral moments of the year including many famous creators such as: Liza Koshy, KSI, Jake Paul and Logan Paul.
Notably absent, however, was PewDiePie – a prominent YouTube figure whose 2017 has been stained by controversy because of his use of inappropriate language during a live broadcast that many deemed racist.
The video, although only 6 days old, has been viewed 140 million times and includes all of the viral moments on the internet such as slime, 1000 degree knife, salt bae and diss tracks comically combining them with some of the most popular songs of the year. They also incorporated major events that occurred around the world for example, the eclipse, Manchester attack and other incidents. Furthermore it encompassed ideas about loving each other and being kind.
However they didn’t include some big creators like PewDiePie and Shane Dawson which upset fans that had been anticipating their presence in the rewind. PewDiePie quoted “It’s sad in a way, that I’m not part of it. But like, I understand why, like I’m not salty at YouTube for not inviting me. Viewers were annoyed that YouTube decided to add problematic YouTubers such as KSI and Jake Paul but did not add YouTubers like Shane Dawson who has a large following and has not caused any drama.
