40s Fashion Comeback

The 1940s was an influential period for fashion, founding iconic styles that will be remembered forever. However, could this fashion be making a comeback?

40s fashion had iconic and fast changing designs with Christian Dior influencing the hourglass figure with their fashion piece called “The New Look” released in the late 40s, which became very popular alongside suits which women began to wear in the factories as they were more practical than skirts.

@realvintagedollshouse is one of the many inspirational tiktokers who inspire people to get involved into 40s fashion with her “Let’s get dramatic videos” which consists of her getting ready to go out in the 1940s and showing accurate 40s inspired or true vintage clothes. She says, “Whether you make do or mend, not buying the latest version of something can save you money, so free yourself from the trend of having the latest trainers it just puts pressure on you, and your wallet”.

This vintage industry is also becoming huge with a worth of £34 billion according to New York Times. Also, there is more availability to buy vintage clothes with over 10 vintage stores in the Lincolnshire area alone.

So how does a fashion period come back happen, in the 1920s women choose to wear boxy dresses to show a more masculine figure. Later, in the 1960s the fashion style came back influenced by the media with a documentary being released called Les Annes Folles which inspired fashion designers to start making 20s inspired clothes again according to The Fashion Institute Of Technology.

So, it could be said that today’s social media influence is influencing the comeback of 1940s fashion, creating and inspiring a new generation of thrifters.
