The word ‘Cosplay’ was created from the words “costume” and “playing” because people dress up for fun. Cosplaying is a popular hobby across the world. Cosplayers love dressing up as their favourite character and even acting out their personalities.
Anime is animated Japanese movies which most of the time contain episodes, such as Demon Slayer, but not always, such as Spirited Away. Cosplaying is sometimes posted onto social media for fun and for people to see. There are easy cosplays that may sometimes only need simple leggings and a t-shirt with a wig and there are hard ones which may need many accessories, complicating detailed clothing with a lot of small, interesting items and a styled, colourful wig.
You may be aware of Genshin Impact (an anime game) cosplayers have a lot of eccentric detail on their costumes to represent their character more because the characters themselves are really detailed; unlike Light Yagami from the anime Death Note, who wears a simple white shirt, red tie and mucky green jeans.
Cosplaying became popular around the 90s after people found out how fun it would be to BE their favourite character!
If you like anime and you love cosplay, you should try and get a costume for yourself, you don’t have to show the world. Some cosplays don’t have to be bought and can either be made yourself or picked out of your closet. If neither or those could work, ask for a costume on Christmas or your birthday, you would rock!
