A very intriguing game of chess was played 2 nights ago when Magnus Carlsen was battling it out against Hikaru Nakamura.

Magnus Carlsen is a famous Norwegian chess player and Chess Grandmaster. Chess.com rates him as number one – the best player in the world and is the first person to reach a rating of 4000 Elo. The Elo System is named after the Hungarian-American physics professor Arpad Elo and is a system for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum two player games.

Jan Gustan, Peter Soviller, Janina Sachdev and Lawrence Hent who commentated on the semi final battle in the Chess Championship said “This game has the 2 of the best players in the world”

Hikaru is another one of the best players in the world and he has been catching Magnus Carlsen up in the rankings of the Chess World.

Chess.com said Hikaru is battling for the number one spot and it was a tough 5 games for both players.

The first game was nerve-wracking for all people watching and thankfully all of the games ended in a draw. Magnus Carlsen won on points of material – This is a score based on the value of the pieces left on the board.

  • Pawn: 1 point
  • Knight: 3 points.
  • Bishop: 3 points.
  • Rook: 5 points.
  • Queen: 9 points.

It was scary for both because it was two of the best players in the world and no-one wanted to go out early on.
