Imran Khan Protests

Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, has sparked protests in the capital, Islamabad. Thousands of individuals are marching on the streets attempting to persuade the government to release Mr. Khan, who was sentenced to 14 years in prison after allegations of corruption and illegal sale of state gifts.

Chaos is taking place as rubber bullets and tear gas are being fired with the intention of stopping the protest from progressing further. However, one protester told the BBC, “we are only here on Imran Khan’s call, Imran Khan told us to come here, not for him, but for ours and our country’s sake, and we will stay here until Khan himself is here with us and tells us what to do next”.

In retort, they have brought in police from across the country and have obstructed the streets with shipping containers, because the marchers are aiming for the city centre and government officials do not want that to happen. They have even banned public gatherings of 5 or more people for 2 months in Islamabad to “ensure peace”.

There are contrasting views about this, with prime minister Shehbaz Sharif saying, “these disruptive elements do not seek revolution but bloodshed” and describing this situation as “extremism”.

This rally has led to consequences, like schools and colleges being closed due to worries about violence, and several internet services being suspended.

This event is ongoing, and I will keep you updated as the protest advances.

  1. It is a perfect balance in your article, you have considered the perspectives of all parties involved, described the ongoing situation very well and have left it up to the readers to make the final decision.
