Genshin impact is a growing game with a growing fanbase but in the future will it be considered one of the video game greats?
On Friday 15 September 2023 Genshin Impact did a version 4.1 livestream and announced that their player base has grown to 99.53 million across the world since it was released in the September of 2020. As a game genshin is an open world, role player game that uses a gacha system.
A gacha system for those who may not know is a way of obtaining new playable characters via “wishing” for them using materials you can get in game. This system has what some may consider a flaw, after hours of getting the required materials to do a “wish” you are not guaranteed to get the character you want. There are bundles where you can get what you need by purchasing them which some see as a disadvantage to those who are not financially able to buy them as well as the younger players who will not have the funds in the first place.
Genshin Impact also has deep and emotional story lines that sometime explore underlying dark themes. It has regions based on different places in the real-world using parts of folklore from those respective places, but the game is criticised with lack representation. We talked to an active player of Genshin who said, “Genshin (Impact) is a game that is made and designed in China. China’s beauty standards are reflected in the game with the majority of the characters being white. The only time that we started to see characters of colour is the few that we got in Sumeru”.

Wow, this is a really good article, I never knew that Genshin had no black representation!
