Tucked away on Guildhall Street in Lincoln, Not Quite North is more than just a camera shop — it’s a haven for analogue photography lovers, beginners, and curious creatives alike.
Born from a desire to challenge what it means to be ‘northern’ and to build a community around film photography, the space is already making waves in the city’s cultural scene.
Alex and her partner in life and business, Ross, started Not Quite North because they felt Lincoln sat awkwardly in the North-South divide — not quite northern, not quite southern — and they wanted to play with that identity. They also noticed a growing number of film photographers in the area and set out to create a one-stop shop where everything analogue could be found in one place.

Their goal was to build a welcoming and inclusive space where people could gather, chat, and share knowledge, especially those new to film.
A big part of that vision was creating a “non-professional” zone: somewhere accessible, friendly, and free of gatekeeping, whether you’re looking to buy your first 35mm camera or repair a beloved old one, Not Quite North offers help, advice, and hands-on support.
They also host events, including one coming up this Sunday for dog walkers and photographers to explore together and take photos in the local area — a great example of how they’re blending community with creativity.
Accessibility is clearly important to Alex and Ross. The shop stocks a wide range of cameras, from top-tier professional models to affordable but high-quality options that are perfect for beginners. Their emphasis on creating a non-elitist environment is what makes Not Quite North stand out — even for someone like me, who had never shot on film before, the space felt open and exciting rather than intimidating.
As I explored the shop, I was struck by the striking vintage artwork decorating the walls — something Alex told me many visitors really connect with. It gives the shop a unique feel and reinforces the sense that this place is about more than just selling gear; it’s about celebrating creativity and culture.
And they’re not stopping there. The next big step for Not Quite North is already underway: Alex and Ross are preparing to open a brand-new studio in Lincoln.
This will be a working analogue studio where people can learn to shoot on film and where other creatives can rent space — something rare in the analogue world. They’re also completing a workshop room on the top floor of their shop on Guildhall Street, which will allow them to host hands-on sessions for the community.

I took all of the photographs in this article on film, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to visit Not Quite North and capture what makes it special. It was a brilliant experience — and one I’d recommend to anyone curious about film photography or just looking for a welcoming creative space in Lincoln.
