Programming Pushes All The Buttons

On the 1st of April 2019, four classes from Dale Hall Primary travelled to Adastral Park in Martlesham to have a day at BT’s Headquarters. When students arrived they were split up into groups of three and were introduced to “Crumblebots” – programmable robots that are ideal for children to use. The bots are a really good introduction to the world of programming. A crumblebot has special things such as line detectors and LED lights. At first, programming the bots can seem hard, but you soon get the hang of it.

Pupils were given an overview on how to programme a robot so that the lights alternated between different colours. Then came the fun part – actually making the robots move! This proved to bit more difficult, because some pupils didn’t know how to navigate the crumblebot properly. However, helpers at the event enabled students to experience lots of “light-bulb moments”

All the tasks were building up to a big “Crumblebot” race. Students had to train their robots to navigate around a track. They did this by coding the bot to recognise black lines. To start with, students raced against other teams in their class. It was a very close contest and the two winning groups went on to the final. Here they raced against teams from other classes and another school. The pressure was immense, but Dale Hall were victorious.

Dale Hall had a fantastic time and would like to thank the people from BT who helped students and made the day so interesting. If you enjoy coding and robots then be sure to check out BT’s Crumblebots!
