Russia & Ukraine – A Decade of Destruction

In January 2022, The Lavada Centre, a Russian independent, non-governmental polling and sociological research organisation, found that 65% approved of Putin personally, and 71% who approved of the Russian president in February 2022 (shortly before the Russian invasion of Ukraine).

For over a decade, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been alarming citizens as well as political leaders globally. The Russia vs Ukraine war has been going on since February 2014 however in 2022, the ‘conflict’ became a war when Russia invaded the Ukraine.

The Prime Minister of Australia: Scott Morrison stated that, “We might be separated by half an earth, but Australia stands with Ukraine.” Another quote residing with Ukraine was from the Prime Minister of Japan: “Japan will continue to implement assistance in solidarity with the Ukrainian people. As well as “Stand up for Ukraine!”

However there have been other statements supporting Russia. A famous one from US President Donald Trump, said that: “You don’t start a war against someone 20 times your size and then hope that people give you some missiles.”

The BBC goes on to explain “Trump has repeatedly blamed Zelensky and Biden for the war, despite Russia invading Ukraine first in 2014, five years before Zelensky won the presidency, and then launching a full-scale invasion in 2022.”

At the time of writing there are attempts to create a binding peace deal which would bring an end to this war – but it remains uncertain whether this can be achieved. Do you think peace can be achieved in these times?
