The Influence of AI & ChatGPT

Over the past couple months, people are panicking about ChatGPT and AI and how people are using it to cheat on their homework and schoolwork. A survey done by Study.com Productive Teaching Tool or Innovative Cheating? | Study.com shows 89% of students use ChatGPT. This is causing a lot of concern from the teaching community.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and chatbots like ChatGPT have had a significant influence on various aspects of our lives, including education. AI has been increasingly used in education to enhance the learning process, making it more efficient and personalized to the needs of individual learners.

One way AI is being used in education is through intelligent tutoring systems, which are designed to mimic the role of a human tutor by providing personalized feedback and guidance to students. These systems use machine learning algorithms to analyse student data and provide targeted feedback, helping learners to improve their knowledge and skills.

Chatbots like ChatGPT have also become a popular tool for students to use in their schoolwork. Students can use chatbots to ask questions, get help with assignments, or even to get feedback on their writing. Some students are even using it to do their homework for them without their teachers knowing. We asked some students at a local school whether they have or would consider using ChatGPT as a cheating tool. Here are a couple responses.

“I would only use it for ideas and would never just copy and paste it from ChatGPT though. I have talked to my parents about this, and my dad said it was fine and even helped log me into it. I have never actually used it for homework though and I’ve only used it for fun.”

“I have used have used ChatGPT for a history and product and I thought it was helpful because it showed the explanations and I think it is a valid app and is ok to use in certain cases”

Interestingly a teacher said, “I don’t think any of my students are using it but I’m aware they know about it. I do not see it as a bad thing because students can use it as a research tool or help them understand the structure of an essay. But if they plagiarise it, it is not a good thing.”

In conclusion, using apps like ChatGPT to help further your knowledge can have positive affects but like all tools it can be used for bad. For example, using it to do your homework for you or using it to write part of an article for you. Yes, that’s right! Paragraph two, three and half of paragraph four were indeed written by ChatGPT.
