John Lewis Christmas advert

As we all know, each year, there is a John Lewis advert that welcomes us into the Christmas season. A quote from the little black book is,  ‘The John Lewis Christmas ad is the definitive ‘moment’ for ad land during the festive season.’

But what is it like this year?

The John Lewis Christmas advert recently appeared on the company’s website but has yet to appear as an official TV advert. This is a Narnia-inspired advert about a woman finding the perfect gift for her daughter. Approximately 1 million pounds was spent on the John Lewis advert this year. It has decreased by 6 million pounds cheaper than their previous year’s Christmas adverts.

There is a quote taken from The Guardian, sarcastically saying, ‘Disgusting, isn’t it? John Lewis’s shocking Christmas advert is actually about … shopping’.

This year, there have been some controversies regarding their new Christmas advert, resulting in many news articles from the British media, such as the Guardian, Daily Mail, and Daily Express.

Many controversies have been about what this advert truly means and why they made it the way they did. A comment taken from a user on TikTok named ‘eleanorstagg340’ says, ‘I honestly don’t get it!?’

Lucy Wright commented on John Lewis’ Facebook page, ‘I don’t understand it? Anyone else as confused as me?!’

But not all voices are negative; Fiona Taylor, from the same Facebook post, commented, ‘had me in tears, I lost my sister this year, and she was hard to pick for gifts (sic) x’. Debbie Reynolds commented again on the same post, ‘ Lovely ad. It reminds me of me and my sister growing up…’

John Lewis responded, ‘Thank you for sharing these precious memories, Debbie…’.

So, what do you think of the Christmas advert this year?

Does it bring Christmas joy to the world? Or confusion?
